Martyr, Witness, Missionary

by May 10, 2021Friar Reflection

There are many different ways to be witnesses and/or missionaries.  In the 1st reading from Acts we hear about Paul and his companions who are traveling missionaries.  They have just traveled across Asia Minor and are now sailing from Troas, close to the ancient city of Troy.  They next travel to Europe and evangelize the city of Philippi in Macedonia.  Paul with the help of Lydia, establishes a church in the city of Philippi.  Later Paul will write back to the church the following:

“I give thanks to my God at every remembrance of you, praying always with joy in my every prayer for all of you, because of your partnership for the gospel from the first day until now.” (Philippians 1:3-5).

Like these first missionaries you and I are called through baptism to be missionaries and evangelists.  We preach the Gospel in many different ways but the most important way is not words but deeds; loving one another as Jesus has loved us (John 15:12).  Jesus’ love is love in action.  He shows His love in service and sacrifice.

As we witness to Jesus in our daily life we are not alone.  Jesus promises us in today’s Gospel: “When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me. And you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.” (John 15:26-27).

Church here in Triangle is like the church in Philippi.  We are empowered and guided by the Spirit as we try to live out the Gospel each day.  I give thanks for the church here in Triangle and for your partnership in the gospel with the words of St. Paul:

“I give thanks to my God at every remembrance of you, praying always with joy in my every prayer for all of you, because of your partnership for the gospel from the first day until now.”
