Parish Mission to Peru

Tentatively scheduled for July 9 – July 16, 2024.

Our Sister Parish (Santa Ana) in Lima, Peru and ministries of the friars in the area.

Learn about the economic, political, cultural and faith reality of our brothers and sisters living in Peru by sharing in this mission experience. Our journey is a mission of presence, standing in solidarity with our brothers & sisters in extremely poor sections of Lima and the Lurin Valley.  While we hope to have the chance to assist local parishioners in physical labor construction or maintenance projects, this opportunity varies greatly from year to year.  No specific skills are required other than having an open mind and open heart!

All applications are due by May 3, 2024.

Mission Information

The topics below are meant to offer some information on the most common areas of inquiry for the Mission to Peru. Please contact Terry Danner to assist you with addtional details for the trip.

Information Session

There is an information session on Monday, April 15 in the Brother Juniper room. You are encouraged to attend if interested in going on the Mission.

Cost of the Trip

The cost of the trip is $1,750 which includes airfare, transportation in country, lodging and most meals, including a farewell dinner. A $100 deposit is due at the time of application. The remaining balance of $1650 is due no later than May 15.

Where do we stay?

We sleep and eat at St James the Apostle, an Archdiocese of Boston facility in a historic section of Lima near the ocean. The facility is modest and clean. Each room has its own bath.

How many parishioners can go?

Up to 10, including 2 facilitators. Facilitators are St Francis parishioners who have been on missions in previous years. They pay their own way like everyone else making the journey. Missioners must be 18 years of age or older unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.

If the number of applications exceeds openings, the date of receipt of the application and deposit will be a factor in prioritizing applicants. Parishioners who have not been on a previous Mission to Peru have priority over those who have already made the journey.

Will there be physical labor?

If we do have the opportunity to work on projects requiring physical labor, be aware that the terrain around the parish is steep and rocky. The surfaces are uneven and can be slippery. Sturdy shoes are necessary. Sanitary facilities at some of the work sites are rudimentary.

How do I apply?

Submit an application along with a refundable deposit of $100. Use the online form at the bottom of this page to apply online. Paper applications are also available on the Church bulletin board or by using the download button on this page. A $100 deposit is due at the time of application, sent to or dropped off at the Parish. Applications are due May 3.

You may also email Terry Danner and an application will be sent to you.

If your application is accepted, the $1650 balance is due not later than May 15, 2024.

Are there other requirements for the trip?

All applicants are strongly encouraged to attend a 60 minute general information presentation in late April.

By submitting an application, you agree and are required to attend two 90 minute orientation sessions (one in June and one in July). Every effort is made to accommodate individual needs in scheduling the sessions.

PART TWO

Please provide a personal statement on "Why I would like to join the mission team to Peru". Include what you feel you can bring to the team, and to the people you will meet in Peru. Say something about what you hope to experience and accomplish while there. And, finally, comment on what you hope to bring back with you when you return.
