According to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, Jesus called Peter and Andrew when they were together mending their fishing nets. The Gospel of John has a slight variation. John the Baptist identifies Jesus as the Lamb of God and sends two of his disciples to follow Jesus. One of those two was Andrew. Once Andrew gets to know Jesus and believes that he has truly encountered the Lamb of God, he runs to announce the Good News to Peter. For which reason today Andrew is known as the “first-called”, especially in the Eastern church. He was the first of the Apostles to be called. It was he who pointed out to Christ the boy with the five loaves and two fishes, which were later miraculously multiplied to feed the multitude [cf. John 6:8-9]. He, along with Phillip, brought several Greeks to Christ [cf. John 12:20-22]), but Scripture tells us little more about Andrew. We know him primarily through his acts and life recorded in the tradition.
Tradition says that Andrew travelled to the coast of the Black Sea and then to Rome. Some less reliable sources say that from the Black Sea, Andrew travelled as far north as Kiev. Then returning from Rome back to the Black Sea, he was arrested on the way and martyred in Greece for defending the faith before the Roman governor. He was crucified there by being tied to a cross in the form of an X rather than a T, perhaps to prolong his agony.
Andrew was an evangelizer. He announced his faith openly without hesitation. He sought out Peter to share with his brother the most important event in his life when he found the Lamb of God. His response was immediate. There was no hesitation or delay. He boldly defended the faith and other Christians before the Roman governor. He took time to explain and announce his faith by tracing salvation history from Adam and Eve to Christ. Everywhere he went on his travel, he evangelized.
As Paul points out to us in the second reading, for there to be faith and belief, there has to be a preacher, an evangelizer. Evangelization is the most basic task or mission for the Church and each one of us. Andrew took the faith to Peter and brought Peter to Jesus. All of us within our particular vocation are called to evangelize those around us. Parents to children. Brothers/sisters to brothers/sister. Neighbors to neighbors. Co-workers to co-workers.
And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard?
And how can they hear without someone to preach?
