The annual feast of El Señor de los Milagros (the Lord of Miracles) take place in Lima every year during the month of October. The occasion is in remembrance of the events that transpired following a life-changing earthquake which took place in Lima and El Callao in the 17th century. In the wake of this natural disaster, those in the affected villages had very little remaining and turned to the sole standing element, a mural of the crucified Christ, for religious guidance and direction. Following the initial earthquake, a second occurred in the city, causing chaos to the surrounding villages except for the adored mural. The mural, painted by a former slave against an unassuming clay building, had many attempts on its existence as authorities prohibited its veneration and tried to destroy it. Standing the test of time, the mural has become one of the most highly venerated symbol in Latin America.
The fiesta is a major celebration of for our Sister Parish outside Lima. In solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Peru, join us Sunday, October 31, 2021 at the 12:30 pm Mass. The Mass will be celebrated in Spanish and English.
La fiesta anual del Señor de los Milagros tiene lugar en Lima todos los años durante el mes de octubre. La ocasión es en recuerdo de los eventos que ocurrieron después de un terremoto que cambió vidas y que tuvo lugar en Lima y El Callao en el siglo XVII. A raíz de este desastre natural, a los habitantes de las aldeas afectadas les quedaba muy poco y recurrieron al único elemento en pie, un mural del Cristo crucificado, en busca de orientación y dirección religiosa. Tras el terremoto inicial, se produjo un segundo en la ciudad, que provocó el caos en las aldeas circundantes a excepción del adorado mural. El mural, pintado por un ex esclavo contra un edificio de arcilla sin pretensiones, tuvo muchos intentos de su existencia ya que las autoridades prohibieron su veneración y trataron de destruirlo. Resistiendo la prueba del tiempo, el mural se ha convertido en uno de los símbolos más venerados en América Latina.
