Scripture: One Book at a Time
The whole of Sacred Scripture is a single narrative that promises and points to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of the World. It is an epic story, the greatest ever told, and told "one book at a time." Each book makes it contribution to the narrative as God reveals God's self to us and his desire that all be saved.
Lesson 8: The Book of Numbers
Life Betwixt and Between
Because of the censuses taken, the tradition has referred to this scroll as “The Book of Numbers” but in Hebrew the title is Bedmidar, “Time in the Wilderness.” It is the account of “life betwixt and between” the Mt. Sinai and the final arrival across the river from the Promised Land.
The Book of Numbers begins with Moses now able to enter the Holy of Holies, into the Presence of God. All should be great, right? From Sinai to the Plains of Moab just across the Jordan from the Promised Land, it should take 3-4 weeks of travel. It takes 40 years. Why? The answer to that is the Book of Numbers.
